84-Year-Old Carlos Soria’s 15th Dhaulagiri Ascent Ends in Unfortunate Accident
Spain’s 84-year-old Carlos Soria Fontaine’s 15th attempt to climb Dhaulagiri, the seventh-highest mountain in the world, has also failed.
During the 15th attempt to reach the peak of the 8,167-meter mountain in Dhaulagiri rural municipality-4 Mudi of Myagdi, a sudden accident occurred, resulting in failure.
Base camp officials reported that Carlos Soria, 84 years old, sustained injuries above 7,000m on Mt Dhaulagiri when he slipped slightly from the climbing route beyond camp III. After Carlos Soria reported leg injuries, a team of Sherpa climbers assisted in his descent from the incident site.
Before leaving Spain to climb Dhaulagiri, Carlos said, ‘I am going to climb Dhaulagiri not to set a record but to continue the joy of climbing.’
Carlos expressed his motivation before departing from Spain to climb Dhaulagiri, stating, “My goal is not to set a record, but rather to embrace the enduring enjoyment of mountaineering.” Carlos left Spain on March 24 to climb Dhaulagiri with his colleague Carcovilla.
Carlos holds a world record for climbing 12 mountains over 8,000 meters, including famous peaks such as Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Manaslu, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, and Annapurna in Nepal.
Due to the past few days’ adverse weather, the climbers who have gone out for climbing have faced problems. Carlos, who had an accident, was taken to Camp Three with the help of Sherpas. This is the 15th attempt of Carlos, who first attempted the climb in 1998.
If Carlos had reached the summit of Mt Dhaulagiri this season, he would have been needed to climb Shishapangma to become the oldest man ever to complete the ascent of all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters.
